Ready to Apply? Asking for Letters of Recommendation

A lot of residencies and fellowships ask for references, and a great letter can tip a close decision your way. The trick is making it easy for the people you ask.

📌 Pro Tip: Asking for Letters of Recommendation

  • Ask early. Give people at least two to three weeks so they're not rushing.

  • Pick people who know your work. A curator who has seen your practice up close beats a big name who hasn't.

  • Send a short packet. Include the program link, the deadline, your artist statement, and 3 to 5 images.

  • Tell them what to highlight. Name one or two things you'd love them to speak to.

  • Follow up with thanks. Let them know how it turned out, yes or no, and keep that relationship warm.
